The campaign to bring a new hospital is a community wide effort lead by a highly dedicated set of volunteers who are putting their professional skills to work for this good cause because of their belief that a community can solve complicated issues and produce positive change. This team of volunteers is backed by solid group of consultants and specialists who also believe in the cause and are bringing their professional skills to bear at minimal cost.h

JOSEPH PLUTA

According to those who know him, no individual has made more personal sacrifices or done more to bring a new hospital to West Maui than Joseph Pluta, who is the public voice of the proposed hospital and Golden Hour Campaign. However, Mr. Pluta is the first to tell you that this is a truly "team effort," of the Kaanapali 2020 Community Planning team, the West Maui Improvement Foundation Inc. Board members, the WMTA Board members, invaluable contributions from key consultants in Hawaii and the mainland as well as key individuals in the Maui Community including our elected representatives.

Joe says "God is in charge of this project," and thanks the generous donation of the land for the hospital by Kaanapali Development Corporation's Stephen Lovelette and the Late A. James Wriston III as the most significant contribution towards the effort.

BRIAN HOYLE

Brian Hoyle, a principal of the Southwest Health Group, is a developer and builder of community hospitals and medicial centers who has committed to building a West Maui Hospital.

Brian is a board member of HealthGroup Partners, LLC. and is the founder and sole shareholder of American Healthcare Investment, LLC, owner of 11 nursing facilities in Iowa and Colorado and sole municipal bondholder securing 4 nursing facilities in Utah.

In 1998,  he founded American Healthcare Associates, a national healthcare management, and consulting company with operations in 10 states.  Mr. Hoyle founded Care First Hospice of Boise, Idaho in 2005, has owned a 96 bed nursing home operation in Newport Beach since 1988 and a 34 bed psychiatric hospital in Newport Beach since 1993.

Since 1976, Mr. Hoyle has been an agent, owner, senior corporate officer in healthcare organizations where he has developed over 50 healthcare facilities in 16 states. He was Chairman and 42% owner of Harbor National Bank, Newport Beach, CA sold to First Community Bancorp in April 2004 and is currently the Chairman and largest shareholder of MetroPacific Bank, Irvine, CA.

NORM BEZANE

Norm Bezane, co-owner of Maui Communicators, has been one of the most vocal and active supporters of the West Maui Hospital since 2003. His contributions include creating this web site in 2004, maintaining the site, advising on communications initiatives, producing news releases, writing viewpoints for Maui News and testifying to government agencies in Wailuku and Honolulu.

In 2007, Norm was appointed to the Maui County Health Care Task Force by Speaker of the Hawaii House of Representatives Calvin Say. In that role, he was instramental in getting the task force to name a critical care hospital in West Maui as the County's highest priority objective and to include other professive recommendations for change in its findings.

Norm's presentation, Triage '07 summarizing progress, identifying key individuals who need to step up to the challenge and picturing county and state officials and others whose support is needed, was a highlight of the 2007 Annual Meeting of the West Maui Taxpayers Association.

Maui Communicators

SARA FOLEY

Sara Foley, co-owner of Maui Communicators, is a key strategist who has been helping the campaign for a West Maui Hospital and Medical Center since 2004. She is the author of "Case for a Hospital," a report designed to provide potential donors with comprehensive information on needs and financial requirements.

Sara was named Public Relations Professional of the Year for the State of Hawaii by the Honololu Chaper to the Public Relations Society of America in 2007 and is the founder of the Maui Public Relations Affinity Group.

Maui Communicators

LEANN STRASEN

Leann Strasen, RN, DPA, FACHE, former chief operating officer of Maui Memorial Hospital, provides advice and counsel on hospital financial feasibility and other heath care matters.

She currently is a consultant for the Sullivan-Lakier GroupLeann. She has authored the text, Key Business Skills for Nurse Managers and conducted workshops and seminars on Financial Management for 15 years. She also teaches financial management, organizational behavior and project management classes for the University of Phoenix online and in the classroom. Leann lives in Lahaina, Hawaii

UWE SCHULZ

Uwe Schulz, prominent Maui architect who designed the Whalers Village Shopping Center, is the architect for the West Maui Hospital. Mr.Schulz is volunteering his time pro bono as the initital lead architect for the hospital. He will assist the WMIF board in selecting the development architect team.

 

JAMES R. MCCARTY

James McCarty, an attorney, assists the West Maui Improvement Foundation in legal matters.
